When was the last time that the Olympics were held in a Central or South American country

The 1968 Olympics were held in Mexico City. Thats the closest to Central/South America it has been.

The Olympics have never been in Central or South America.
The have been in Australia twice, that is the only times the Games have been held in the Southern Hemisphere.
By definition Mexico is considered to be in North America, not Central America.

l agree with the first two with Mexico City the closest the Olympics have got to Central America.

Rio de Janiero is one of four cities still in the bidding for the 2016 games. They are competing against Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo.

Of those three all of the countries that they belong to have hosted the Olympic Games in the past. Tokyo is of course a former host city.

The last time the Games were held within the region was in 1968, when the Games were held in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, a country located in Central America. To date, it is the only moment that the Games are held in Central or South America.
