What about our armed forces who risk their lives for us every day, do not they count? If riding a bike in a circle or swimming quickly keeps me safe, then I am missing the point!

Yeah thats true, but this is something that only happens every four years and it is significant to celebrate as they return home..
But its true - we should be recognising the troops that risk their lives for us every day

Did you not see on the news Gordon Brown in Iraq? He told the soldiers he thought they were as courage as the athletes of the olympics. doh

The UK should recognize its troops AND the olympic athletes. Just because there are troops fighting in the Middle East, you do not just reject all other aspects of life. The Brits have done exceptionally well in the Olympics this time and should be congratulated. It makes up for being so crap at the Eurovision song contest and the Euro football.

Olympics are symbol of peace, and any Honor to Olympic honors our troops and helps rise human consciences so that no young man or woman should die in war again.
Instead of spreading fear and confusion, you may think beyond your little selfish self.

Yes l agree. l am uncomfortable with calling them 'heroes'. To me a hero disregards his/her own safety for the benefit of others. It would be far better to call them 'champions'. But congratulations to them on their sporting achievements.

I'd like to second everything Lazuli above just said. No idea who he/she is, but you've put my thoughts into words, thank you.

NO WAY are the Olympians ''heros'' our armed forces and those who do GOOD are the heroes not those who run fast and swim fast etc etc

Totally agree ,we should be ashamed. These sports people attend the games for the glory and fame made by the media .Our soldiers signed up to defend our country with their lives.Instead they are used to invade Innocent countries for politics hence get very little recognition and none of this media hype when they come back ,dead or alive.People seem happy to buy tennis rackets but not bullet proof vests.

its an event that only comes every 4 years so enjoy it while you can.
The armed forces are risking their lives for a stupid war created by George Bush and that fool Gordon Brown follows him like a sheep.

Two completely different issues. Congratulating one does not take away your appreciation for the other.
