Why were the Anceint Olympic is Created and who by??
Hello, im just wondering why the ancient olympics were created as im doing a project on it and also if possible could you please include who created them....Thanks Heaps!!!

The original Olympic Games were first recorded in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, & were held until AD 393. Interest in reviving the Olympic Games proper was first shown by the Greek poet & newspaper editor Panagiotis Soutsos in his poem ''Dialogue of the Dead'' in 1833. Evangelos Zappas sponsored the first modern international Olympic Games in 1859. He paid for the refurbishment of the Panathinaiko Stadium for Olympic Games held there in 1870 & 1875. This was noted in newspapers & publications around the world including the London Review, which stated that ''the Olympian Games, discontinued for centuries, have recently been revived! Here is strange news indeed . the classical games of antiquity were revived near Athens.

Anyway, the ''official'' modern games were founded by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin & first held in Athens in 1896.

The Ancient Games were totally different, they started off as a religious festival in honor of Zeus & were held at Olympia b/c this was considered a holy place, connected to Zeus & had been a center of worship for centuries - & more importantly, it was believed to be the spot where Zeus had held athletic events for gods & heroes. So in a sense, the Greeks saw Zeus as the ''creator'' of the Olympic games. They dated their first Games (not the Zeus ones) back to 776 BC, but that was basically a guess that they just stuck with. No one knows the real start date, but Olympia was a religious site centuries before the games began.

There was also a Greek tradition of having athletic competitions at funerals, to honor the dead. The earliest account of this is in the Iliad, which gives a description of the games Achilles held in honor of his friend Patroclus. since the Iliad is usually dated to the 8th century BC, it actually matches up well w/ the date given for the first Olympics.

Anyway, the games at Olympia gradually lost most of their religious aspects & eventually became almost entirely about athletic competition.

The Ancinet Olympics were created by the Ancient Greeks to honour their gods. It was held at Olympia & during the Olympics, all wars were off.
Zeus was the main god. No women were allowed, & wrestling was contested by naked men. People who cheated had to pay for a statue for Zeus & would be in enternal infamy.
The winner got an olive wreath, that is it but when he went back to his home city of Athens, Sparta he would be a celebrity. There was no second or third. Hope this helps.
