What are good and bad reasons for the olympics?

china did cheat and its hard to verify ages among athletes !!!

All the commerce and camraderie are great. Seeing nations that never won a medal win one is awesome. The fact that a guy from Iran is now in the NBA is totally unexpected.

Bad things: our tolerance to how corrupt and unjust some things are in China. It goes beyond empathizing with others' POV the way they control their people. We should do what we did with the Soviets and help them get their best and brightest the heck out of there.

Good- brings nations together in a peaceful manner to compete in sports.
You get to view other nations strengths/weaknesses in sports.

You learn about other nations (especially about the host country)

Bad- POLITICS may interfere, like it did in this one, since China was the host country.

Good- China became open and used its history to portray its old and modern China.

Bad-People still question wether its real or fake.

good things,

its the largest competition in the world with more athletes from more countries competing over a diverse range of events

it gives us a chance to see sports that otherwise do not get a lot of media coverage, which must also be inspiring for young athletes starting out in these sports as the olympics lets us see the best of the best

the chance to learn more about the host nation, which is one reason why l like to see the games awarded to nations that have not had them in the past (ie: l would love to see Brazil get the 2016 games, they have such a vibrant culture)

such a competiton inspires countries to invest in training athletes in sports that might otherwise struggle to receive funding


bad things

the ongoing use of performance enhancing drugs continues to impact on the credibility of the games particularly in some events.

That though it is theoretically non political this has often not been the case, ie look at the cold war era games & the boycotts that resulted & their impact on participation. or the frequent, usually derogatory, use of the term 'communist china' that has been used so often on YA by people making implications of cheating

in these recent games l have been distressed to see so many unproven accusations of cheating by the Chinese such as the pointing of fingers at the judges by the public when their personal favourite did not win gold, & particularly when the finger pointing had been done by countries with a substantial history of proven cheats, just look back on these boards over the last month at the many vitriollic comments directed at China.

Americans showed the world they are number one at being the biggest, most obnoxious sore losers at the Olympics. l suppose this is a good point.
